Hello, I’m Shawn Pulscher, Associate Director, MBA Career Services. I partner closely with the Marketing Club as well as faculty, alums, and employers to help students learn and grow as marketers.
We ensure there is a robust curriculum that begins with marketing fundamentals and runs all the way through how to succeed on the job. We understand that every student is different and every career search is different, so we strive to help students find their fit, even if the path is non-traditional. What types of events does the Marketing Club provide to get hands-on experience with marketing?The Duke MBA Marketing Club seeks to provide its members with ample opportunities to get the experience of the marketing world right here on campus. Every year, Fuqua holds an internal case competition and sends groups of students to Marketing Case Competitions across the country. Aside from those case competitions, Fuqua also holds an annual Brand Challenge to give participants a true brand management experience and an excellent opportunity to showcase their skills.
What resources are available for members who are switching to marketing without prior experience?If you are switching to marketing from a different functional background, you are not alone! Our club members come from a variety of backgrounds outside marketing and advertising—consulting, non-profit, education, etc. As long as you have a passion for the industry, we can help you translate your story into why you would be a great marketer. The other members of the Duke MBA Marketing Club are a great resource for what to expect in your internship and full-time positions. The Marketing Club will provide you with tools to approach problems through the Marketing MILE series, opportunities for store walk-throughs with companies recruiting on campus, and case competition preparations, among other things.
How focused is the club on CPG versus other industries?CPG has long been one of the premier industries for marketers to flex their branding and general management muscles, but there are plenty of marketing opportunities in other sectors! Our club focuses on providing students with the tools they need to recruit for marketing roles in any industry, and we bring a variety of companies to campus to engage with students.
